Aglaonema Care Guide: Growing Chinese Evergreens in West Georgia

Aglaonema Chinese evergreen care guide Metro Turf Garden Center Bremen GA

This Aglaonema care guide covers everything you need to grow Chinese evergreens successfully indoors. Aglaonemas are among the most popular rare houseplants we sell at Metro Turf Garden Center in Bremen, GA. They’re beautiful, tough, and the rarer varieties are genuinely hard to find anywhere in West Georgia outside of our tropical houseplant shop.

If you just picked one up or you’re thinking about it, here’s what you need to know.

Aglaonema Light Requirements

Aglaonemas are one of the few colorful houseplants that thrive in low to medium indirect light. The darker green varieties handle the lowest light conditions. Pink, red, and variegated varieties like ‘Lady Valentine’ or ‘Siam Aurora’ prefer medium indirect light to maintain their color intensity — a north or east-facing window works well.

Direct sun will scorch the leaves. Keep them back from south or west-facing windows, or use a sheer curtain.

Watering

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Aglaonemas tolerate underwatering much better than overwatering — root rot from soggy soil is the most common way people kill them.

In Georgia summers, you may water every 7–10 days. In winter, cut back to every 2–3 weeks. Always use a pot with drainage holes.

Humidity and Temperature

Being tropical plants, Aglaonemas prefer temperatures above 60°F and moderate to high humidity. Georgia’s natural humidity is actually a benefit here. Keep them away from cold drafts, exterior doors in winter, and air conditioning vents.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.

Common Aglaonema Problems

  • Yellow leaves — usually overwatering or cold stress
  • Brown leaf tips — low humidity or fluoride in tap water (try filtered water)
  • Leggy growth — not enough light; move closer to a window
  • Drooping — underwatering, or the plant is too cold
