Lithops Care Guide

  • Light: Provide a bright, sunny position. Introduce stronger sun gradually to avoid scorching.
  • Water: Follow the plant's growth cycle rather than a fixed schedule. During active growth, let the mix dry completely between waterings. Keep dry during dormancy and while a new leaf pair is absorbing the old leaves — resume watering only after the old leaves are fully dried up. Overwatering is the most common cause of rot.
  • Soil: Use a very free-draining, gritty succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity: Low humidity and good airflow suit Lithops well.
  • Feeding: Fertilize sparingly during active growth only.
  • Temperature: Protect from frost.

Lithops FAQs

  • Why are my Lithops mushy? Mushiness almost always means overwatering. Lithops store water in their leaves and need far less water than most succulents. When in doubt, don't water — they can go weeks or months without it during dormancy.
  • When do Lithops bloom? Most species produce small daisy-like flowers in late summer through fall, emerging from the gap between the leaf pair. Blooming typically happens once the plant is a few years old.
  • Why is my Lithops splitting? Splitting is normal — it's how the plant grows. A new leaf pair emerges from the center while the old pair slowly dries up and shrinks away. Don't water during this process.
